Thousands of victims still face delays and excuses

Many claims go unresolved for more than a year and delays are compounded by what Natalie Ceeney, chief executive of the FOS, describes as ‘an atmosphere of universal suspicion and distrust’ by the banks.

The Mail on Sunday has seen widespread evidence of this – with a steady stream of unresolved PPI-related complaints sent to us by frustrated readers.

Payment protection insurance policies were designed to cover loan or credit card repayments if a customer lost their income because of redundancy or illness.

Since 2011, PPI complainants have received more than £10billion in compensation. But thousands more are still waiting for redress and banks are routinely rejecting valid claims.

The number of new PPI complaints received by the Ombudsman between April and June totalled 132,152 – nearly 28,000 more than were received in the year to the end of March 2011.

PPI remains the most complained about financial product and the majority of customers who protest go on to win their claim.

So, why are there still delays and how can you succeed?

Lloyds TSB Bank was exposed earlier this summer by an undercover reporter for its shoddy complaints handling. The bank’s call centre staff were told to operate on the basis that PPI was never mis-sold.
