New PPI Claims Concerns

New figures revealed by the Financial Ombudsman Service reveal that Payment Protection Insurance provided the most cause for complaint over the previous financial year.

The FOS fielded over 925,000 complaints during the period, and over 49,000 related were regarding PPI Laws and Rules. Payment Protection Insurance is sold as part of a mortgage, credit card or personal loan, and covers the policy holder in the event of illness, job-loss, injury or death.

The competition commission earlier announced it’s intention to ban PPI being sold as part of mortgages, loans and credit cards.

The main motivation for this ban was initially that the automatic sale of PPI suppresses competition, and could render the policy holder unable to shop around for the best PPI deal.

Seemingly supporting the idea of intervention, a lot of the FOS figures seem to focus more on the fact that PPI has been mis-sold, rather than the ability of policy holders to obtain compensation.

Mr James Daley, speaking on behalf of Which? Money, has said that he believes that a significant amount of consumers confused about PPI laws and rules will fail to make a complaint. ‘Many people give up at the first hurdle rather than going to their ombudsman’, Mr Daley stated.

The Citizen’s Advice Beaureau stated that while they were supportive of the move to ban automatic PPI sales, it was vital that consumer’s priorities should be focused on protecting their debts.
