Mis Sold PPI Victims Thrown Lifeline

A lifeline has been thrown to millions of borrowers who were mis-sold Personal Protection Insurance, but had their consequent claims turned down.

The Financial Services Authority, responsible for regulating the City, have given consumers who have recently made a complaint regarding their PPI additional time to refer to the Financial Ombudsman Service. Previously, consumers were given a deadline of six months after having the PPI dealt with by their bank to take their complaint to the ombudsman.

The new ruling gives an extension on the complaint period, extending it now until October 27th 2010 for any consumer who received a final response from a bank any time between November 28th 2009, and April 28th 2010.

Once this letter has been received, they are then free to contact the Financial Ombudsman Service for advice on PPI rules and laws, and also to potentially reclaim mis-sold PPI claim finances.

Estimated figures showed that policies were mis-sold to over two million people who would never have been able to claim, such as those who are self-employed. Further figures have shown that banks have been rejecting up to six in ten of the complaints made regarding PPI claims. However, nine in ten of the complaints made by consumers to the Financial Ombudsman service regarding the PPI rules and laws have actually been overturned in favour of the consumer.
