FOS Considering a Budget Expansion

As one of the chief organisations responsible for the banks now having to refund customers as a result of mis-selling them payment protection insurance, the Financial Ombudsman Service is now considering an increase in their budget as a result of the claims regarding PPI continuing to steadily increase.

It is estimated that the claims made to the FOS regarding missold PPI has now reached a staggering 3000 a week. In their most recent newsletter, the Ombudsman had made consumers aware that whilst the claims had fallen in the previous quarter, the situation reversed in the following months, and claims are once again heavily on the increase.

The service also announced that it was expecting to soon receive complaint number 300,000 – showing just how much of an impact the high court ruling regarding PPI has made.

Natalie Ceeney, the FOS Chief Executive, commented that her service would be consulting other firms on whether it would be necessary for them to free up more resources in order to deal with the ever-growing list of complaints.

‘A better understanding of the numbers and issues around PPI is crucial to our ability to plan ahead efficiently and gear up our operations for next year. For us, this isn’t just a question of the volumes and flow of cases. It’s also about how well (or otherwise) the banks and other financial businesses, as well as the claims-management companies, will themselves have dealt with those cases that are subsequently referred to us to sort out and settle’ Commented Ms Ceeney.
