Barclays Bank Tops Complaints List

Although Barclays’ overall customer complaints fell 11% compared to the previous 6 months, it still managed to surpass other financial institutions as the most complained about bank.

Of the 370,733 complaints submitted to the bank, 90% were responded to and closed within eight weeks of the case being opened. Of these claims, 62% of resolved cases were upheld in favour of the customer.

Lloyds Banking Group came in second place with 253,735 complaints, 32% less than Barclays. Lloyds also came in with a higher resolved cases percentage at 93%.

MBNA Limited, Bank of Scotland and Santander made up the rest of the top 5 most complained about banks of the first half of the year.

Payment Protection Insurance (PPI) complaints have unsurprisingly been ranked as the most complained about financial product in the six month period. PPI claims have dominated the UK financial sector over the past few years due to the sheer scale of mis-selling.

From January to June, a staggering 1,786,626 complaints were made regarding PPI, accounting for 61% of new complaints submitted in this period.

Martin Wheatley, the Financial Conduct Authorities’ chief executive commented on the most recent data update, “We expect firms to put their customers at the heart of their business – an important part of this is the way they handle customer complaints…Publishing complaints data is a powerful tool that helps encourage competition between firms to improve their service to customers, and help consumers assess their relationships with banks and other providers.
